Fuel trains are responsible for connecting the burners of a gas-fired boiler to ensure that the boiler produces steam safely. A thorough understanding of the valves that make up a fuel train will help you better care for your boiler system in the future.

1. Vent Valve

One of the most important components in a fuel train is the vent valve. Gas-fired boilers must be connected to a natural gas pipeline in order to function properly. In the event that any of this gas leaks past a safety valve in the boiler assembly, the risk of accidental combustion increases. Vent valves are designed to capture this errant gas and safely vent it outside the boiler system. If the vent valve on your fuel train fails, you could be putting your entire facility at risk. 

2. Shutoff Valve

Another important valve found in an industrial boiler fuel train is the shutoff valve. The purpose of a shutoff valve is to immediately terminate the flow of gas into the boiler system. If the gas pressure inside the boiler system becomes too high, the risk of an explosion becomes a real possibility.

Some boiler systems have manual shutoff valves that must be operated by an employee monitoring the boiler's gas pressure reading. Other boilers are equipped with automatic shutoff valves that will close off the gas supply once pressure levels exceed preset parameters. You should inspect your system's shutoff valve regularly to ensure the safety of your boiler.

3. Combustion Valve

Air and fuel must be mixed together inside a boiler's combustion chamber to fuel the steam production process. If the proper air-to-fuel ratio is not achieved, it's impossible to execute an efficient combustion process. The combustion valve acts as a gate that regulates the flow of air and fuel traveling into the combustion chamber. This valve opens and closes at a set rate to meter the fuel and air ratio. If your combustion valve malfunctions, you could experience a significant loss in steam production. This will compromise the performance of your industrial facility as a whole.
